Is a Heli-Coil a permanent fix? ›

Heli-Coil^® Kits - Thread Repair Kits & Master Sets

Restore stripped threads easily and permanently with Heli-Coil thread repair kits and master sets. Heli-Coil application-specific thread repair kits make complex repairs manageable and are often the recommended solution by both domestic and foreign automakers.

However, key inserts provide an alternative to helicoils and they have their own set of inherent benefits and flaws. Key inserts became popular because of the ability to quickly repair stripped or damaged threads without having to discard the original part.

The improved distribution of preload-force increases the fatigue strength of dynamically loaded bolts. This is why helicoil® inserts are also used for high- strength holding materials, e.g. steel or cast iron alloys. The basic material of helicoil® ensures that bolts do not seize under normal environmental influences.

Tap the hole using the Heli-Coil tap supplied in the kit. Check the size on the shank of the tap to be sure it is the right size. Tap the hole to sufficient depth to ac- commodate the insert length and bolt or screw being used.

Another disadvantage of helical coil type inserts is that they are sometimes harder to fit than a solid bush. This applies especially In deep or inaccessible holes.

The Time Sert, which was used to install the bolt on the right, is said to be a more durable tool than the Heli-Coil.

Apply LOCTITE^® 2620™ Threadlocker into the helicoil

You might be familiar with LOCTITE^® 2620™ as a red, high-strength threadlocker. In this case, the job involved attaching the helicoil to the insert tool provided and then applying LOCTITE^® 2620™ to the outside of the helicoil.

Strength: A key-locking insert is much stronger than a helical insert, particularly in high temperature and high torque environments. Ease of Install: A key-locking insert is easier to install than a helical wire insert. Price: A wire insert is much less expensive than a key-locking insert.

Using the handle for the tap, we installed the insert. You can use a light thread locker, but it is not necessary, the insert is designed to hold itself in place. Fine thread – Install the HeliCoil insert into the pre-coil tool. This tool compresses the insert to the correct size.

Use HELICOIL® wherever low shear strength materials – such as aluminium or aluminium-magnesium alloys – are used. In these applications HELICOIL® thread inserts generate heat-resistant, wear-resistant and high-strength thread of the highest precision. No internal thread wear, even with frequent use.

How deep should a helicoil go? ›

Insert installation depth is dependent on the presence of a countersink (3/4 to 1-1/2 turns below the surface with a countersink and 1/4 to 1/2 turns below the surface without a countersink). Tangless CoilThread Insert installation is now complete.

But Helicoils are cheap to install and work well. If they are inserted correctly and the plugs are not allowed to corrode in-place they should last a lifetime.

The short answer is no. STI tap dimensions are designed specifically for use with E_Z Coil™ inserts. Once an STI tap has been used, the threads created are incompatible with Standard Wall or Thin Wall threaded inserts.

If you use two helicoils to get a longer grip they can't get 'out of sync' because they are both held in same thread. That's not a worry.

Any threaded insert longer than the diameter of the bolt becomes overkill. 2X the diameter is considered the max needed for any application. Having a 40mm long thread for a 14 mm bolt is pointless, so no such insert is made. HeliCoils come in lengths as a function of the diameter of the thread (D).

Removing helicoils is a very difficult task, but it can be done with a helicoil extraction tool. This tool has a sharp blade that must be inserted at the top of the helicoil, and while being held in position strike the back of the tool with a hammer.

They require special tools and techniques to extract them from the threaded hole without damaging the surrounding material. That being said, there are some situations where locking helicoils may be able to be reused.

If the helicoil is damaged, you may be able to use an EZ OUT to remove it and just put another Helicoil back in. Be sure to break off the tag at the bottom of the old Helicoil before inserting the EZ OUT if it is still there. The KEEN SERTS are good too if there is enough material around the hole to let you go bigger.
