Imagine if Superbad were directed by a woman who didn’t allow the toxic masculinity and misogyny to go unchecked, while also l giving her genuinely funny and moving characters the room for growth and empathy. I Like Movies does that.

A combination of Superbad, Clerks and Licorice Pizza that’s also not only, as the title suggests, catnip for those who love to flout their film knowledge and opinions, but also a look back at what it was like to be an awkward suburban teen in 2002.

Seemingly thwarted from every angle, he takes a job in a local video store in order to indulge his love of movies, at which point things become complicated. While it does manage to have an infectious energy to it and is relatable for anyone who even remotely experienced teen angst, I Like Movies falls a bit flat due to some overstated performances and some dialogue and situations that just don't feel real. Is it worth a watch? Sure, just as long as you don't set your sights too high.
